Eagle found hurt in Poquoson released at York River State Park after rehab
hen Iris Speechley first saw it on Sept. 26, the bald eagle was dazed, covered in mud and unable to get off the ground. She saw it again Tuesday, hurtling into the sky after undergoing rehabilitation with the Wildlife Center of Virginia.
And she thinks she’ll see the eagle again.
Speechley is convinced the male eagle — tagged bald eagle No. 17-2469 by the Wildlife Center of Virginia — has a family near where she found it in her backyard in Poquoson.
Metal 3D Printing Keeps Cyrano the Cat Landing on All Four Feet | 3DPrint.com | The Voice of 3D Printing / Additive Manufacturing
We’ve seen stories of 3D printed prosthetic legs for cats before, but we don’t often hear of 3D printed feline implants like Cyrano’s. It was difficult to make the implants small enough for a cat, but eventually the metal component models were 3D printed using DMLS technology at EOS’ headquarters in Germany, finished at BioMedtrix, and then delivered to the surgical team.
Chimpanzees learn rock-paper-scissors: New study shows that chimps' ability to learn simple circular relationships is on a par with that of 4-year-old children -- ScienceDaily
Chimpanzees of all ages and all sexes can learn the simple circular relationship between the three different hand signals used in the well-known game rock-paper-scissors. Even though it might take them longer, they are indeed able to learn the game as well as a young child.
These police dogs sniff out memory cards used to hide child porn
When the Labrador retriever trained by Jordan Detection K-9 sits during a search, it’s an indication that the police dog has sniffed out what it's looking for. But the target isn't drugs or explosives.
It's an electronic storage device with images of child pornography. And it's hidden.
“Show me,” the handler commands.
The dog points its nose and also might wag its tail or tilt its head. The USB drive or memory card is here.
Dog Leads Family To Girls Who Were Struck By Lightning « CBS Pittsburgh
A dog helped family members find two girls who were struck by lightning while hiking in Utah on Friday morning.
According to a release from the Beaver County Sheriff’s Office, two girls, ages 8 and 16, were camping during a family reunion and left their camp on an ATV, taking a family dog with them.
Officials told CBS affiliate KUTV that while the girls were hiking, lightning struck the 8-year-old girl on the top of her head and traveled into the 16-year-old girl.
The dog returned to the camp alone and led family members back to the two girls, who were found unconscious on the ground.

Parasitic Worm Treatments Could Soon Be Legal in Germany - D-brief
In humans, the eggs hatch but they don’t survive long enough to colonize our guts.
Advocates of the treatment say diseases like Crohn’s, multiple sclerosis and asthma are so common in the modern world, because we’ve removed so many of the immune system’s common foes that it begins to turn on itself. For evidence, they point to the relative absence of these diseases in less-developed countries.

Control of lupus nephritis by changes of gut microbiota | Microbiome | Full Text
Dysbiosis of gut microbiota promotes autoimmune disorders that damage extraintestinal organs. Here we report a role of gut microbiota in the pathogenesis of renal dysfunction in lupus. Using a classical model of lupus nephritis, MRL/lpr, we found a marked depletion of Lactobacillales in the gut microbiota. Increasing Lactobacillales in the gut improved renal function of these mice and prolonged their survival.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus emerged long before the introduction of methicillin into clinical practice | Genome Biology | Full Text
The spread of drug-resistant bacterial pathogens poses a major threat to global health. It is widely recognised that the widespread use of antibiotics has generated selective pressures that have driven the emergence of resistant strains. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was first observed in 1960, less than one year after the introduction of this second generation beta-lactam antibiotic into clinical practice. Epidemiological evidence has always suggested that resistance arose around this period, when the mecA gene encoding methicillin resistance carried on an SCCmec element, was horizontally transferred to an intrinsically sensitive strain of S. aureus.
Results Whole genome sequencing a collection of the first MRSA isolates allows us to reconstruct the evolutionary history of the archetypal MRSA. We apply Bayesian phylogenetic reconstruction to infer the time point at which this early MRSA lineage arose and when SCCmec was acquired. MRSA emerged in the mid-1940s, following the acquisition of an ancestral type I SCCmec element, some 14 years before the first therapeutic use of methicillin.

Korean Sa-Ahm Acupuncture for Treating Canine Oral Fibrosarcoma. - PubMed - NCBI
In this study, oral fibrosarcoma was managed well by both Sa-Ahm acupuncture and medicinal herb treatment. The result suggested that Sa-Ahm acupuncture along with herbal treatment could be a potential medical option for canine oral FSA therapy.
